Pharoah Sanders – Live – Theresa Records 180 Vinyl 2 LP Gatefold Sleeve

£49.95

This album features Pharoah Sanders playing some no-nonsense tenor in a quartet with pianist John Hicks, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Idris Muhammad. Sanders performs “It’s Easy to Remember” (in a style very reminiscent of early-’60s John Coltrane), an original blues, and two of his compositions, including the passionate “You’ve Got to Have Freedom.”

The musicianship is at a high level and, although Sanders does not shriek as much as one might hope (the Trane-ish influence was particularly strong during this relatively mellow period), he is in fine form. Review by Scott Yanow/AMG

Rahsaan Roland Kirk : Blacknuss – Pure Pleasure Records Vinyl LP

£29.95

From its opening bars, with Bill Salter’s bass and Rahsaan’s flute passionately playing Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”, you know this isn’t an ordinary Kirk album (were any of them?). As the string section, electric piano, percussion, and Cornel Dupree’s guitar slip in the back door, one can feel the deep soul groove Kirk is bringing to the jazz fore here.

Scofield, Holland, and Foster were all alumni of Miles Davis’ groups and they appeared together on Joe Henderson’s 1993 Miles tribute So Near, So Far.

Shamek Farrah – First Impressions – Pure Pleasure Records 180G Vinyl LP

£29.95

For a label that wasn’t around long, Strata East achieved the same sort of label recognition that Impulse! or Blue Note managed to build.

In other words, you knew what you were getting when you bought a record on the label, even if you didn’t know the names on the outside of the cover. This is no exception.

Who is Shamek Farrah? Who knows? Who cares? It’s the music that’s important.

This is the standard spiritually intense new jazz one learns to expect from the label, soaked in some Eastern influences but always with its ear to the street. Musicians took their roles as leaders and spokesmen very seriously back then.
