The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet: Free Jazz Speakers Corner 180g Vinyl
£35.00The term ‘free jazz’ was already in existence – but it had a quite different meaning, namely jazz without paying for an entrance ticket.
The album “Free Jazz”, however, was intended to lend its name to a quite different style of jazz. ‘
Free’ playing – now this meant that no one was bound to conventions, you could let your imagination run loose. Free jazz gave one the chance to find new rules for every new composition. And it was to be the greatest boost to innovation in the world of jazz.
Ornette Coleman’s album from December 1960 stands at the beginning of the free jazz era like a massive portal.
The Strokes – Is this it – Vinyl LP
£25.00The album cover of Is This It by the Strokes captures an era of nostalgic hedonism. Although the band’s catchy guitars and garage-rock leanings made this album an instant classic, its provocative cover was arguably just as impactful. But years on, the casual objectification and sexual provocation of the image speaks volumes about the music and fashion scenes at the time, and just how much they have changed.
With Is This It, their debut album, the Strokes burst onto the music scene with a slouching, drawling rock’n’roll shrug that epitomized the frenetic nostalgia of the early 2000s. The time was ripe for the scratchy, post-punk influenced guitars and throwback basslines of the Strokes, together with their tousled hair and don’t-care attitude.
The Verve – Urban Hymns – Vinyl LP
£37.50The Verve may not have been in the mainstream “Britpop” movement but it has stood them in good stead in regards to their recorded material.
Urban Hymns crossed over from record collecting circles into the mainstream of British culture, with tracks like the omni-present “Bitter Sweet Symphony” elevated to anthem status.
Urban Hymns set the bar extremely high for both the band and other cross-over British music, with rousing rock dynamics based around the at-times tender songwriting of Richard Ashcroft.
The Young Rascals – Groovin’ – MoFi Mono SACD
£39.95Mastered From The Original Master Tapes For Supreme Sound
Simultaneously elevated and bypassed by the artistically prolific year in which it was released, the Young Rascals’ Groovin’ remains high-water mark of a collective Rolling Stone boldly proclaimed “the blackest white group of all” in 1970.
Home to three Top 10 singles and a diverse array of pop music in step with the era’s exploratory creativity, the set belongs aside the Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band, Love’s Forever Changes, Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow, and 1967’s other pioneering recordings. Particularly now that it boasts definitive sonics.
Train – Drops of Jupiter – Mofi SACD
£42.00Triple-Platinum Train Album Awarded Two Grammy Awards: Drops Of Jupiter Contains The Hits “Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)” And “She’s On Fire”
Sourced From The Original Master Tapes And Strictly Limited To 2,000 Numbered Copies: Hybrid Sacd Plays With Openness, Airiness, And Smoothness
New Release SACD
Very Limited, Only 2,000 Numbered Copies!
There’s definitely nothing wrong with echoing classic rock and harmonic pop sounds, especially when it’s done this well. Drops of Jupiter, Train’s two-time Grammy-winning 2001 album, revels in sweeping hooks and soulful comfort borrowed from proven 70s methods. Remarks of jealous critics aside, the approach resonated with the public and made Train a ubiquitous presence of mainstream radio, a status the group still enjoys.
