Johnny Cash – American II: Unchained – Vinyl LP
Original price was: £27.99.£24.00Current price is: £24.00.The first four songs on Unchained come from the songbooks of Beck, Don Gibson, Soundgarden, and Jimmie Rodgers. What might look like absurdly unsupportable eclecticism in other artists, of course, is pretty much standard stuff for Cash. Unchained is hardly standard, though; it’s more like the best album he’s made since his 1984 departure from Columbia Records. Not only is this a stack of songs perfectly and idiosyncratically suited to the man, they’re given door-rattling backing treatment by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who prove as fitting for Cash’s music as his own Tennessee Two was back in the day
Ben Webster – See You at the Fair (Acoustic Sounds) 180g Vinyl LP Gatefold Sleeve
£59.95Ben Webster’s final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. He would soon permanently move to Europe where he was better appreciated. Webster’s tone has rarely sounded more beautiful than on “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Our Love Is Here to Stay.”
Jimmy Smith – Root Down (Verve Acoustic Sounds) 180g Vinyl LP

Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson (Acoustic Sounds) 180g 1LP Gatefold Sleeve

Pharoah Sanders – Live – Theresa Records 180 Vinyl 2 LP Gatefold Sleeve
£49.95This album features Pharoah Sanders playing some no-nonsense tenor in a quartet with pianist John Hicks, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Idris Muhammad. Sanders performs “It’s Easy to Remember” (in a style very reminiscent of early-’60s John Coltrane), an original blues, and two of his compositions, including the passionate “You’ve Got to Have Freedom.”
The musicianship is at a high level and, although Sanders does not shriek as much as one might hope (the Trane-ish influence was particularly strong during this relatively mellow period), he is in fine form. Review by Scott Yanow/AMG
